A 17 year old teen was forced to cut his Dreadlocks at a High School Wrestling competition. Andrew Johnson is a Buena Regional High School student.
@brhchiefs
Andrew was competing in a Wrestling match.
He was already under pressure, it was overtime and a victory would mean a win for the team. The referee who is a known racist who's been involved in other controversy. Accused of using racial slurs. He claimed that Andrews hair did not comply with the rules and regulations. The referee gave Andrew an ultimatum, either forfeit the match or cut your hair. I Can Only Imagine the emotions this young teen was going through being put in this situation by an adult that was not his parents. You can see the Athletic trainer approached Andrew with a pair of scissors and proceed to cut his dreadlocks off. This was unacceptable actions taken by the referee. In a gym full of parents, students and onlookers. Not one person came to the defense of this young man. Ultimately Andrew chose to let them cut his hair. Andrew was victorious as he defeated his opponent leading the team to victory. His hand was in victory but you can see his displeasure with the referee. He has wrestled with and without a cover over his hair without incident.
The video has gone viral as over 14 Million People has viewed the video.
Outrage is being expressed by Millions of people from around the world. Activist have expressed they've displeasure with the referee and know racist.
The family still supports the team athletic trainer and coach whose been coaching Andrew since he was 5 years old.
They puts the blame solely on the referee.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy @GovMurphy Tweed:
“Deeply disturbed that Andrew Johnson, a student at Buena Regional H.S., was forced to choose between keeping his dreadlocks and competing in a wrestling tournament. No student should have to needlessly choose between his or her identity & playing sports.”

The rules clearly state that the referee must inspect the players appearance prior to the start of a wrestling meet. The referee Maloney was late and missed the weigh in. He failed to express his concerns about Andrew's hair. He also warned Nate Andrew's younger brother.
Dominic A. Speziali, Esq. - J. Fine Law Group The family's attorney, said they await the results of an inquiry by the N.J. Division of Civil Rights and that the referee's conduct appears more egregious as additional information comes to light.
