When people talk about vintage Hip-Hop, they usually point to New York. They should also be pointing to Dallas.
D.R.U.M.S. RUGGED is a Dallas, Texas native who was heavily influenced by the emerging sounds of Hip-Hop in the early, mid, and late 80s — the era when the culture was still being poured into its foundation, when the beat and the rhyme and the block party were the whole blueprint. Some artists study that era like homework. D.R.U.M.S. lived it, absorbed it, and carries it in his sound to this day. He is a true Hip-Hop head, and you can hear it in every bar.
What separates him is the range. A unique flow and cadence that belongs to nobody else. A diverse spread of topics and subject matter that moves from braggadocious to conscious without ever losing the thread, all of it sitting on top of rugged beats — that is his specialty, and it is right there in the name. For years DJ Kawon gave the culture a platform. Now the culture is giving him his flowers.
People know DJ Kawon as one-third of The Mic Council and as the creator of The Mixtape Show, a platform dedicated to preserving and celebrating Hip-Hop culture. For years he amplified artists through interviews, conversations, and media coverage, doing the work most people never see — the work of keeping the culture connected. In 2025 he took home an honor at the Heritage Hip-Hop Awards for his musical production. Then he did something most commentators never do. He stepped out from behind the platform and became a contributor to the culture himself, transforming into executive producer, curator, and cultural architect with his debut album Boom Bap Alumni, released on Mad Good Records.
And that album is exactly why he is back at the Heritage Hip-Hop Awards this year — nominated for Group/Collab Project of the Year.
If any project ever earned a collaboration nomination, it is this one, because collaboration is the whole point of the record. Boom Bap Alumni brings together emcees from the United States and Canada, connecting artists across geographical borders while staying rooted in Hip-Hop's core principles. Kawon did not chase trends. He created chemistry. Solo performances from artists like Notes 82, Acewonda, Tre-Dot, and Travisty The Lazy Emcee. Collaborative records featuring Len Dor and The BadSeed.
