Ladii Girl is double nominated at the 2026 Heritage Hip-Hop Awards — Artist of the Year and Solo Project of the Year.
Some voices are trained and some voices are inherited, and Ladii Girl's voice is both. Born Johanna Hampton in Boston, Massachusetts and raised in Worcester, she did not have to go find music because music was already in the house waiting for her. She grew up listening to her mother's band play, and her uncle Harold Hampton sat her down at a keyboard and taught her how to play simple notes. She spent nights in the basement creating music with her brothers while their mother's Stylistics and Delfonics records filled the room. That is not a backstory made up for a press release. That is a foundation, and it is the same foundation so many of the greatest voices in Black music were built on.
The church. Ladii Girl sang in the choir at the AME Baptist church in Worcester where she was raised, carried that into the all-city choir in high school, and had been writing poems and songs since elementary school. When you hear her sing today you are hearing all of it at once — the choir, the basement, the Stylistics, the Delfonics, and the notes her uncle taught her. Soul does not come from nowhere. It comes from somewhere, and hers comes from Worcester, Massachusetts.
She earned her name the old way too, stage by stage and crowd by crowd. The Dublin House in Boston. Pufferbellies out in Hyannis. And the Worcester rooms that raised her — The Lucky Dog Music Hall, Club Oasis, and the Raven where she became a crowd favorite. Records like "Where Did The Love Go," "Shorty Rock," and "Hydraulics" featuring Josh Brown of TDM showed her range, and her reach even crossed the water when artists in the UK met her music with warm responses. Then came the EPs that made her impact on the music industry undeniable, Secrets Of A Woman and Entanglement. No machine behind her. No shortcut taken. Just work.
Right now Ladii Girl is running back-to-back singles and the records speak for themselves. On "Sweetest Taboo (High Off You)" she delivers a smooth, soulful R&B anthem that captures the intoxicating feeling of being completely consumed by love. Heartfelt lyrics, rich melodies, and that signature vocal style — it is the sound of an artist who knows exactly who she is. Then on "Entanglement" she goes somewhere most artists are afraid to go, into the blurred boundaries of love and attraction, the confusion and vulnerability that arise when emotions become intertwined before you can name them. At the 2026 Heritage Hip-Hop Awards, Ladii Girl is nominated twice. Artist of the Year. Solo Project of the Year. Read that again, because double nominations are not given out for participation. Hip-Hop and R&B grew up in the same house, the same neighborhoods, the same church choirs, and the same basements. Tonight the world was introduced to the beginning of a new era of sound. Bloody Waters release party came and went making the world a more soulful and forgiving place. The world knows many people that can sing, but not too many people know of Gail Campbell. Tonight the world was introduced to Gail Campbell and a renewal of faith in music started to grow when music from her Debut album, Bloody Waters, started to play. The crowd swayed back and forth with joy in their hearts. Young women praised danced to the music giving God worship and praise for the creation of music that was delivered by Stan Ipkiss and Gail Campbell. The hood came out to celebrate and the listeners were given a reason to believe that real music still exist. I call this the Genesis because in the book of Genesis God began the world giving people the commandment to take control of the world and make it our own. Gail Campbell is taking the world ear by ear, soul by soul and giving them a renewed understanding of music coming from the soul, not a program director or someone telling you how to think, sound, or feel. When Gail danced with her mother to the classic track Overdose and brought out Tha Savior to rhyme over the gritty 70s dance track the crowd was moved by the soul and spirit that moved through out the room.
This night was a celebration not only for Gail Campbell to release her voice and emotion on music. This is the night that real music came back to the forefront and people were treated to not only the depth of emotions that came from Gail's inner self. We were all treated to her pain, her joy, her growth, and the genesis of her new life as healer through musical expression.
